Music criticism workshops under the guidance of Jacek Marczyński

The National Institute of Music and Dance, in cooperation with the Polish Music Publishing House, would like to invite you to the music criticism workshops, which will take place during the II Stanisław Moniuszko International Competition of Polish Music in Rzeszów on 14-18 September 2021. The best participants will be awarded an internship in the editorial office and publications in "Ruch Muzyczny".

- The task of the journalistic workshop participants will be to create reports and reviews of the auditions of the 2nd stage and the finals of the International Polish Music Competition in two performance categories - piano and chamber ensembles - comments Katarzyna Meissner, Director of the National Institute of Music and Dance. - Under the supervision of editor Marczyński, the participants will learn to write almost "live" and get to know the kitchen of editorial work on the competition newspaper.

Texts reporting the progress of the competition will be published in an electronic, daily competition bulletin, among others, on the website of the International Polish Music Competition konkursmuzykipolskiej.pl.

The most outstanding participant of the workshops will be awarded an internship in "Ruch Muzyczny", sponsored by Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne. - We would be happy to invite a person selected by editor Jacek Marczyński for a month's stay in the editorial office. Presence in the headquarters of "Ruch Muzyczny" will give an opportunity to test oneself in an editorial battle, and to get to know the secrets of working in the oldest music periodical in Poland. An additional incentive is the "internship pocket money" awarded to young reviewers and the opportunity to participate in artistic events in Warsaw - said Daniel Cichy, the director of Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne and editor-in-chief of "Ruch Muzyczny". The magazine will also publish the best texts written during the entire workshop.

The workshop will be conducted by Jacek Marczyński - outstanding journalist and columnist, reviewer for Rzeczpospolita daily, long-time collaborator of TVP Kultura, Ruch Muzyczny and theatrical monthly, author of books: Ten Dancing Women, Ten Dancing Men, Talks about Opera, Faces of Wotan. Tomasz Konieczny in conversation with Jacek Marczyński". - For young people wishing to write about music, such workshops are the best opportunity to acquire practical skills. A critic should also be able to use his or her knowledge when they need to quickly verbalise their own impressions, formulate an authorial opinion. This is what is required when reporting on the competition's daily auditions. I intend to entrust this task to the workshop participants - says Jacek Marczyński.

The workshops are open to students and graduates of music faculties and humanities, as well as anyone with a defined musical interest in line with the competition profile, who wants to develop their competencies in writing about classical music (adults up to 30 years of age).

Participation in the workshops is free of charge. The National Institute of Music and Dance will reimburse workshop participants for accommodation and travel costs in the amount specified in the Rules, and will provide free admission to auditions and concerts of the International Stanisław Moniuszko Polish Music Competition in Rzeszów. For writing the texts and licensing them for publication, each participant shall receive a one-off honorarium of PLN 500 gross.

Applications (completed application form and attachments, i.e. CV with a description of musical interests and any text on classical music of one's own authorship) should be sent to: biuro@konkursmuzykipolskiej.pl by 12 August 2021.

The workshop is intended to include no more than ten participants. The selection of candidates to participate in the workshops will be made by the workshop editor and representatives of the National Institute of Music and Dance.
