Carter Johnson began the study of piano at age five with Shelley Roberts, with whom he studied for 12 years. He continued studies with Michelle Mares and then with Mark Anderson at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He completed his studies of piano performance and piano pedagogy with distinction, winning the national gold medal for the highest marks in Canada. He is currently completing his MM at the Juilliard School in New York, and will be commencing an MMA at Yale University in New Haven later this year. Johnson has established himself as one of Canada?s most exciting young pianists.
In 2018, he won the top prize in two of Canada?s most important competitions, winning both Grand Prize in the OSM Manulife Competition in Montreal as well as First Prize (along with the prize for the best performance of the test piece) in the CMC Stepping Stone competition in Quebec City. He also won the first prize at the Thirty-Sixth Valsesia Musica International Competition in Varallo in 2020. The artist has performed with orchestras, including l?Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, l?Orchestre Métropolitain, the Orchestra of the Americas, the Victoria Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra of Northern New York. His playing has been broadcast by medici.tv and Radio-Canada. In addition to his musical career, Johnson is an accomplished actor: he holds an ATCL with distinction in speech and drama from Trinity College London. He lives in New York, where he is active as a soloist, collaborator and teacher.
